Juan Ignacio Merlos

At 38, Juan Ignacio Merlos has been playing the Argentine Open for 21 years. Being the eldest and maybe the headiest of the brothers, he is the organizer of El Paraíso on the neld and off it. And he tells “No Doubt About It: This is a Moment Supreme for Polo".

"Not nowadays, but that before he found it hard: 'other years it hard for me. I don't believe that by being the captain it means 1 e to manage the team, but instead I should be the one they look to. I think Sebastián is as much the captain as 1 am.  Agustín is spectacular as team mate, but rather bohemian in that everything is fine by him. Paco, despite having a different sir-name and last ar' s bad luck as we11 as this year' s, is going through a season of eat integration, and he' d give his life for the team and for the ends he's made. So that now I don't find it hard to be the link'.

"What is your opinion of high-goal polo throughout the ~] years you've spent in it?"

"Nowadays the horses can't get any better; the players can't get an) more skilful; people don't nt in Palermo ... Genetics are amazing There has been great progress in the last twenty years. It has beer: my lot to play practice matches with Juancarlitos Harriott; I'v~ played with Pieres; with Cambiaso and now with Tincho. Ne doubt about it, this is a moment supreme for polo. There are sh good teams; publicity as never before ... Palermo has never beer: as good as it is now."

"Do you miss playing as Number 1? You did it very well at Tortugal when Agustín had to leave the field, playing against Ellerstina."

"When the game ended I said to Agustín I'm not going back to playin~ as No 3'. lt's permanent wishful thinking. It's another mission; é different kind of responsibility; one gives free re in to talento l' d lik~ to. But Tincho, at every match, connrms that he would be a waste in mid-neld; he proves I'm wrong and I return to my place."

"Has becoming rather tired led you to think of letting up a bi1 either he re or abroad?"

"Yes. I'll see if in 2008 I can choose where I want to play. I want te put more energy into this (local polo), because it's what I enjoy. For these last two or three years in which I will still be playing, ] want to do it well. Due to their age there are several who should give up before, and the bastards keep on playing (smiles). And although there is a good generation of youngsters, I don't think they're ready to replace a Pepe, or a Ruso, or Marcos (Heguy), 01 even the very Milo (Fernández Araujo)."

"What would you say to Milo in his farewell?"

"He has always been an honest man; a family man, and it was very nice playingwith him for two years. Our illusion was to get togethel again, but he was very comfortable in Chapaleufú II and today ] wouldn't change Paco for anyone. 1 hope we've made this last Open unforgettable for him
