Polo in Argentina

Polo games are played in Argentina approximately since the year of 1890. This sport was one of the consequences of the influence that the British had in Argentinean population. In our country, in the beginning of the polo practice, the horses that were use to play the sport were the Creole (“criollo”) horses.  This creole breed has been replaced over the years due to the cross with other breeds, mainly with the race horses.

All this improvements are making the industry of polo in Argentina the main sport for export. But this has to do not only with the wonderful herds that are being developed in our country but also with the quality of the polo players.  If you go to the most important polo tournaments in the world, it is highly probable that you will find horses and players from Argentina.

We can say we owe all this to the great breeder we had and we still have in our country. They definitely knew how to improve the speed, the structure and the aptitudes of the horses for a better performance in polo sport.

We can tell this because all the great polo horses that we have today are descendants of those that were raised here in our land back in the beginning of the practice of this sport.

Many tourists travel from all around the world in order to find some experience in polo sport. The variety offered goes from seeing a polo match of the Argentine League, up to having some polo lessons with one of the most famoust polo players in Argentina.

La Dolfina, La Ellerstina and Chapaleufú are the main polo teams, which are always candidates for the national tournament of the AAP (Asociación Argentina de Polo, Argentine Polo Association). This spring we will have our tournament number 114.
